I'LL DO IT MYSELF

About the Book

I'll Do It Myself: Rebuilding my life after serious brain injury tells the remarkable story

of Sandra Hubert, a Queensland-based mum of three boys. Sandra acquired a brain

injury at the age of 31 – this book details the injury and its effects, and the frustrating,

slow recovery.

The story demonstrates (through Sandra's example) that even though a person may have experienced a huge, devastating, life-altering challenge, they can choose to be determined and figure out a way to heal from, grow through and potentially overcome their challenge.

The book is ordered chronologically, starting with Sandra's early life and paying homage to the people who were and are important in her life. It shares the remarkable love story that is her marriage to Roland, and it provides the blow-by-blow details of the health tragedy that unfolded when Sandra was in the late stages of her third pregnancy.

Readers are shown how Sandra became aware of the extent of her injury's limitations, and yet chose to retrain her brain in an attempt to regain her sense of self... and a sense of control over her life. The story reveals how, time and again,

Sandra pushed through discomfort, disorientation and fear to recreate her life. It is, ultimately, a story of choice – Sandra chose to put the shattered pieces of her life back together and create something of beauty and impact.

About Me

Sandra is a wife, mother, nana, family person and a friend to many. During her work career she has worked as a Management Accountant in very diversified and privately owned group of Businesses. She has gained valuable knowledge working in small firms, with sole traders to multi-nationals in manufacture, agriculture, construction, wholesale, retail, taxation, H R and Property Management.

Family is very important to Sandra, as is giving back to the community. Sandra has served on committees and boards over the years for many local to Australia wide organisations. Sandra has worked in every role from member, treasurer, secretary, chairperson to director. Always finding a way to help her community. After the 2019 floods in her city, Sandra became known as the Suitcase Lady as she helped clothe hundreds of locals who had lost everything.

Sandra now divides her time between her work as an Accountant and as a Disability Support Worker. Sandra says that this way she can help more people in more ways. On her days off, Sandra sews for her hobby named ‘Memories Made With Love Sandra’.  Here Sandra makes Memory Pillows, Memory Bears, Memory Cards and more to help families cope with the loss of a loved one or for a celebration. Also sewing quilts and patchwork plus other craft for family and friends.

Being busy and juggling a balance between work, family and friends can be a challenge but there is nothing more important than time with the grandchildren.

Sandra had to rebuild herself after a serious brain injury. It showed her how much determination, strength and courage she had. No matter what your problems are, we can overcome those problems together.

Sandra’s favourite saying is:  Live well, Laugh often and Love with all your heart.
